Your first course of action will be to write a lettter to the reporting credit bureau and notify them of the incorrect information. In the letter you will also need to reiterate that the information is false and that it be removed immediately. In your letter make sure you are very specific as what is reporting wrong and how it needs to be fixed. Sending an accurate and thorough letter will enable them to fix the information promptly without any confusion. In addition, to the letter you will also need to include a copy of the credit report with the inaccurate information. Make sure you mark the account that needs to be changed by highlighting the item or circling it with a marker. In your letter you will need to include why you feel the item has reported incorrectly and any documentation that will help prove your case.

Perfect examples of this would be a letter from the specific creditor verifying the inaccuracy or proof that the account was paid. Fortunately, the law is on your side and it states that the agencies are required to take all complaints very seriously. They must also complete a full investigation within 30 days from the date of your complaint letter. To make sure that reporting agency recieves the letter and completes the investigation whithin the time allowed, make sure your letter is sent through certified mail. You should also keep copies all of this for your records.

If you still haven't recieved a letter or confirmation of their investigation after 30 days, then you will need to call and ask the status of your report. Remind them it is federal law that they handle your account and respond to you before the 30 day deadline. Furthermore, just because you have an error on your credit report don't feel like you have to pay someone hundreds of dollars to fix it for you. It is your credit and you have the right to have it reported accurately. Keep in mind that the three credit bureaus are for profit organizations that make millions of dollars a year to keep files on consumers. It is because of this that they have an obligation to protect your good name report accurately on all of your past, present, and future accounts. Also, when you do find erroneous information make sure you act to fix it as soon as possible. With that being said credit agencies have tons of employees that are there to help you make sure that your credit file is handled properly and in your best interest.

If for any reason you recieve a letter saying that the information you disputed is in fact accurate, all you have to do is keep sending a new dispute letter every 30 days and eventually they will take it off. However, you will typically have to pay for these services on a monthly basis. Sometimes these companies can be advantageous for people that don't have the time to do this on their own.
